Insurance Reform… Now

AARP Texas and Texas Watch, organizations that represent over 2 million Texans, recently announced a new statewide campaign to pass true homeowners’ insurance reforms that will protect every day Texans from radical, unjustified rate-hikes.

Texas homeowners currently pay the highest premiums in the nation. Despite passage of modest insurance reform in 2003, rates continue to climb for many Texas families while their coverage has decreased dramatically:

In September 2003, the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) revealed that insurance companies are currently overcharging Texas homeowners by hundreds of millions of dollars through excessive premiums. TDI ordered companies to reduce rates and eliminate excessive overcharges. Many insurance companies refused and today these companies continue to charge consumers excessive premiums.

By mid-June of this year, Texas homeowners will have been over-charged by more than $387,225,077. That amount will continue to rise every minute of every day while insurance companies ignore the law. AARP, Texas Watch and fellow Texans are now calling on Texas legislators to stand up for Texans and force the special-interest insurance-lobby to stop overcharging Texas homeowners.

The insurance industry has failed to live up to the promises they made to Texas legislators, regulators and worst of all to Texas families. The Texas Legislature must flex its muscle and force the insurance industry to be accountable for their actions, the rates they charge and the service they provide Texas policy-holders.

Texans are tired of being held hostage by the insurance industry when they threaten to leave the state if their demands for more pro-insurance industry ‘reforms’ are not met. True insurance reform would hold insurance companies more accountable.

Texas Watch will be holding workshops across the state for Texans who would like to become a part of their “Citizen Lobby Team” to help in the fight for true insurance reform. In 2003 there were 1878 registered lobbyists in Texas working on insurance issues. The Citizen Lobby Team is meant to counter the influence and power of the multi-million dollar insurance lobby in the Texas Capitol.
